An Inconsiderate Truth

I recently read an article about how Angelina Joli flies on commercial airliners to do her relief work. Good for her! I'm really tired of the hypocracy of celebrities who claim to be "green" living in huge mansions that are powered primarily by coal-fired electricity, flying around the world in private jets and being driven in private limos to promote their environmental concerns.

Electric CoOp penalizes Customers who install Tankless Heaters

About a year ago, I installed a gas Tankless Water Heater. My local Untility (Atlanta Gas Light), gave me a $100 rebate. I got a $300 tax rebate. I'm saving a significant amount of money by using a heater that heats on demand. Great!

I visit my Mom and Dad over Thanksgiving and my Dad mentions he is thinking about replacing the Hot water heater. Of course, I start trying to convince he and Mom to go tankless. Then my brother chimes in and says "NO, You'll make their bill go up!" "What? That is ludricous!", I say.

He then shows me a newspaper article in the Horry Independent (www.horryindependent.com Where a woman living on a fixed income has had her bill raised because they found out she installed a tankless water heater. As the article states, her electric bill was 120-130 a month. After installing the tankless heater, it dropped to 65-80 per month. Once the elecetric co-op found out she had a tankless water heater, they replace her electric meter with a "focus" meter, and now her bills are over 200 a month.
Here is the link:
http://www.horryindependent.com/default.asp?sourceid=&smenu=1&twindow=&m...

(or go to www.horryindependent.com, go to the bottom of the page and search for "tankless" for articles after 9/1/2008.)

I was shocked and appalled. This company is actively penalizing people for installing tankless water heaters (albeit electric). Under the circumstances, I had to withdraw my recommendation for a tankless heater (unless they begin subscribing to gas)

One statement a company representative makes is "Penelope Hinson, spokesperson for Horry Electric Cooperative, is sympathetic with Morrison’s problem, but says the entire cooperative membership can’t be responsible for paying a single member’s cost."

What???

The customer states she is cutting back on food to be able to pay her electric bill.

I understand the load that tankless heaters place on the system, but is it the customers fault that the haven't built the infrastructure to handle it?

Disgusting, this is just disgusting..

Water Heater Woes

Medullan Marauder's picture

I recently had a new gas (tank style) water heater installed at my home. While the plumber was here I took advantage of his presence to ask him what he thought about these "on demand" water heaters that we hear so much about through the magic of marketing (sic).

He informed me that if I chose to go that way I would likely have to increase the size of my gas supply line and the size of my flu pipe and chimney to accommodate the device. It seems that these "on demand" water heaters do their magic by consuming a very large amount of energy for a short amount of time whenever the heater is activated by turning on the hot water. They also recommend that you install separate heaters for kitchen and bathroom to be sure that you would have enough hot water.

The electrical utility that serves the woman in this story was never designed to accommodate this sort of peak amperage (the little factoid of amperage consumed by this system was left out of the story).

Now imagine if everyone in this womans community were to install this sort of system. An entire rethink and overhaul of the local grid would be required to handle the intermittent load - costing the community a whole lot of money to upgrade the infrastructure.

The main lesson that I gleaned from this little tale of buyers remorse is to do your research thoroughly before making any major investment. And no, the salesman is not a reliable source of information. Think about how your investment will impact the community at large and in this woman's case, she should have consulted with her utility first to see if they concurred with the information that was given to her.

As always in America and almost everywhere else - "Caveat emptor" - let the buyer beware is the mantra of the marketplace. The forces of the marketplace rarely act in your best interest. This woman made her purchase based solely on her own perceived bottom line and the line of BS spouted by the salesman. The company that sold it to her did so based on what they perceived as best for their own bottom line. This is a great example of how short term, myopic thinking can lead to problems for the community at large.

My own bottom line is this. We are all in this thing together whether we know it or not and we are going to need to cooperate and make some personal sacrifices to overcome the many obstacles and problems staring us in the face right now.

We need to look at this current crisis as a great opportunity to make the needed changes to ensure a decent, prosperous, livable future for ourselves and our decendents. When times are good, no social change is possible in America because this country has a disdain for change through planning. It smacks too much of socialism. Change in America is only allowed to come through a crisis. Planning, cooperation, long term thinking, self denial, self discipline, thrift, conservation, even sharing have all somehow become negative concepts in this bizzaro America. Consumerism, egotism and even greed itself have been held up as the true American values by the dominate culture and MSM.

"Where have you gone Joe Dimaggio?"

Time for big change. We can do this if we really want to do it. Wall Street and Madison Avenue will go along in the end, kicking and screaming as usual and then they will try to sell you the idea that they were right there with you all along leading the way. Sound familiar?

Now - Buy some more crap that you really don't need. This may be your last chance.

I hate crap I can't use

I was just outside replacing an energy efficient light bulb that I have used for possibly all of 20 hours. It looks brand new, it IS brand new. I wonder if they just aren't putting in the quality control that's needed? So much for "efficient".

Hello Gail

Hello Gail. Hope all is well with you.

Sorry to hear about your little problem with your Compact Fluorescent Light bulb. If I remember correctly from reading about these devices from a couple of years ago, most if not all CFLs are not designed to work outdoors especially in cold weather. Look for bulbs specifically designed for outdoor applications. Some of the newer designs may have overcome these limitations. As always with new technology read the directions on the packaging.

Keep your seatbelt fastened. We are in for a bumpy ride.

I don't think you have

I don't think you have enough facts to argue Angelina Jolie green lifestyle... in fact I don't care too much about her green choices, I am more focused to make my own green choices because after all we all need to make our green choices to make a difference. I already made my plans and got electric star appliance parts and things won't stop here, I want to do this as much as I can afford it.

Even if they were flying

Even if they were flying around the world in private jets and lived in huge mansions that are powered primarily by coal-fired electricity that wouldn't mean they are hypocrites.

Currently, unfortunately, there are not enough green energy available.

Gore never said that life should stop. That people should not fly. That private jets should be banned. That we should not use big buildings or that we should shut down coal-fired power plants tomorrow. That's just a strawman created by denialists and right wingers.

The goal is to shift the energy sector away from fossil-fuels to renewable sources. That will be a gradual process. It will not happen overnight.

The Gores don't use fossil-fuel based electricity in their house and they fly commercial but Gore does much more good by paying for offsets and travelling around the world to tell others to do whatever they can (without telling then where to live and when to fly) to reduce carbon emission. It makes a much bigger difference.

Moreover the last two decades have proven that the only realistic way to solve this problem is to convince people that we can do it without sacrificing our current living standards and freedoms. That doesn't mean to give up this or that but to create more green energy. How will that happen?
With more investment from both business, consumers and government.
Since green energy is more expensive today that traditional energy who is the most likely to pay for it? Those who have money not Joe Q.

So I'd like to know how much Angelina Joli has invested in green power. I'm not interested in her travel habits. That's irrelevant. We need money not 10,000 pounds less CO2.

(It wouldn't hurt if you checked how many people live in a particular building and compared the total energy consumption to the amount the same people would consume if they lived in separate buildings and if you checked the climate where the building is, by the way. Total consumption itself says nothing about efficiency.
Also it's not the car. It's the engine, stupid. You can have a limo or an SUV which emit less polution than a sedan. Not that Gore has a limo or and SUV but hybrid SUVs are now available on the market, it's just that most SUV owners don't give a fuck about pollution and are not willing to pay for the hybrid versions.)

Clarification

"Green" energy.... I hate the term "green" to describle all of this. To describe "green" energy let's all use the correct term: ENERGY EFFICIENT.

There are ways to generate energy without using harmful materials or non-renewable resources. Has anyone heard of Solar Engery, Wind Power, and HydroPower? I guess not.

Swtiching over to energy efficiency is NOT expensive. It is cheaper. Most product pay for themselves in 5 years. Compact flourexcent light bulbs last longer and provide better light quality. Tankless water heaters save energy, Engery star appliances save energy. THINK about small ways to SAVE energy and not just switch over to "green" energy but that does not realistically exist.

As for hybrid cars. There is only ONE hyrbid SUV on the market, the Toyota Highlander. The problem isn't that they don't care about pollution, it's that SUV owners want the big ass car to show off their money. If people would settle for a smaller car we wouldn't be having this problem. I for one want the Prius that parks itself.

Finally, do research before making assumptions. Sustainability is affordable and realistic. The small things count like changing light bulbs. Adopt the 2010 Imperative. Buy hybrid vehicles. Restore and renovate. Don't be wasteful. Buy organic products. Buy locally. There is an entire list of things we all can do to save this planet. Stop blogging and complaining and spread a positive message that WE CAN DO THIS TOGETHER. Limit your energey consumption. Do research. Become educated. Then come back and post blogs to inform others.

Green energy does not mean

Green energy does not mean energy efficiency.

I can use far more energy than you do even waste it as much as I like I could still get all of it from renewable sources.
At the same time I could burn coal and use the energy in an efficient way if I don't waste any of it.

There is only ONE hyrbid SUV on the market, the Toyota Highlander.

Not true.
Compare Hybrid SUVs
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/hybrid_sbs_SUVs.shtml

Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid, GMC Yukon Hybrid and Dodge Durango Hybrid will go on sale this year.
So there's no exuse.

The problem isn't that they don't care about pollution, it's that SUV owners want the big ass car to show off their money.

Which pretty much means they don't care about pollution.
