I have been back in South Africa since 2004 after becoming thoroughly fed up with the way things were.

In August 2001, I wrote: WE THE PEOPLE ARE UNDER SEIGE.

I speak for the child alone and confused
I speak for the child who is being abused
Too frightened to tell, too young to know why
Hiding the shame and wanting to die

I speak for the poor child, a hole in it’s shoe
Walks to school in the rain, wet feet all day through
A stomach that aches, the hunger’s so bad
A biscuit and tea, that’s all momma had

I speak for the child who is mentally retarded
From whom other children are shielded and guarded
No kindness, no caring, a hole in the soul
Trying so hard, never scoring a goal

I speak for the black child who should be so proud
For the color, the vigor, they lend to the crowd
Third-world citizens, second-rate schools
First-hand insults from prejudiced fools

I speak from experience, the first child was me
The second, a neighbor, the one who drank tea
The third my brother, who never got started
The fourth, my friend, who got broken-hearted

I speak for us all to you leaders of humanity
Chart us a course that will lead towards sanity
Set up the laws so the world you will leave
No more the innocent child spirit will grieve
