radical, huh?

Yankee Doodle's picture

Better if Gore had supported protests and appeared "radical" and confront a corrupt election, then lie down for eight radical years of GW Bush. Why don't you get real my friend. By the way, protesting doesn't always mean marching around with a sign in your hand.

He didn't back down

What were you doing for those 36 days after election day? Watch baseball or travelling in another galaxy?

A Common Misconception

I still see people asking why Gore backed down or why Kerry backed down regarding Ohio in 2004.

Simple answer: He did not back down. They fought all the way to the Florida Supreme Court and the US Supreme Court. Al Gore had said he would abide by the ruling of the SCOTUS and he did so because he is a man of his word and respects the law, unlike many others we could name.

Al Gore has said that in the United States there is no intermediate step between a Supreme Court ruling and a violent revolution.

Unless Gore thought it was a good idea to start a violent revolution, which he did not, there really was no other meaningful path to follow. . That's part of our dilemma, the people in charge of upholding our system, the US Supreme Court, have at least 5 members willing to put Republican politics ahead of democracy and justice. Impeachment may well be the only way the Legislature or the people have to remove criminals in the Executive branch without the Republican roadblock in the US Supreme Court.

The decision of the court in Bush v. Gore "May be ranked as the single most corrupt decision in Supreme Court history." Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz

peaceful protests, man.

Yankee Doodle's picture

Al Gore could have encouraged massive peaceful protests, not a "violent revolution" until all the votes were counted or a re-vote in Florida, Americans were and still are very angry about this. But Al Gore did at least fight, John Kerry seemed to wimp out instantly after the irregularities of the Ohio voting.

And peaceful protests would have made all the difference

Yep.

Get real. Protests do not make any difference on any issue. Poll numbers can, and even that depends on the actual issue.

Not to mention I really doubt even 1 million people would have gone to the streets.
And 100 million people voted. Do the math.

The whole thing would have done only one thing: make Gore look like a radical who simply lost it.

in hindsight

Hi Yankee Doodle!

I suppose Gore could have encouraged his supporters to engage in peaceful protests. But, under those conditions, that's not who Al Gore is. He did say he would abide by the SCOTUS ruling. Gore was told by others to expect that ruling, but he sincerely had faith that the court would not base it's ruling on political favoritism. Maybe sometimes it's better to be naive and wrong than totally cynical, maybe not. In any case, if he did that he would not be accepting the courts call. Gore is a true patriot who wanted to see healing in America even if it cost him personally. I don't think any amount of protest would have forced the court to change their mind or direct a re-vote. That just wasn't in the cards. John Kerry was in an even worse position. His option was to contest Ohio to the same gang that gave Florida to Bush. Not such an easy call.

The cost to this nation of G.W. Bush's presidency is unforgivable. But, making Bush into some sort of victim would have had other consequences. Having the Bush/Cheney regime rejected by most of the people who were conned into voting for them may do more to promote long-term healing and let the country view this whole battle outside of partisan politics. We can only hope.

Elections in extra innings

I like your quote from Alan Dershowitz, nice work. Let's help get Al Gore elected next year. You know he's the very last guy Bush/ Chaney want to see as our next president. I'm still very wary and distrust the election process here. Asking Bush to clean up elections in this country is like asking a Barry Bonds to clean up steroids in baseball. So even if Al Gore is the candidate, every state will have to be watched carefully.
