NEW YORK (CNN) -- Former Vice President Al Gore said he has "fallen out of love with politics" and has no intentions of running for office again.
Former Vice President Al Gore said the only campaigning he wants to do is against global warming.
"I'm involved in a different kind of campaign, not for myself not as a candidate, but to change people's minds about the most dangerous crisis we've ever faced, and the greatest set of opportunities we've ever confronted to solve this climate crisis," he told CNN's Larry King on Thursday.
When asked on NBC's "Today Show" why he wouldn't run for president again -- when presumably a president could shape an agenda to fight global warming -- Gore said those in power must have the support of the people to make it work.
"The key players are the American people," he said. "When the American people have the awareness of what this means for their children, and for their grandchildren, that all of civilization is at risk here, then they will demand that whoever is running for office, whoever is elected to serve, will have to respond to this."
Despite Gore's stance, many grassroots movements, with Web sites such as AlGore.org and draftgore2008.org, are trying persuade him to run.
"Americans from every corner of our nation are calling on you," reads a petition on Draftgore.com. "Please listen to our plea and run for the Democratic nomination for the presidency of the United States in 2008." The petition has has nearly 100,000 signatures.
And according to a recent CNN poll, Gore is the choice of 16 percent of likely Democratic voters, putting him in third place, behind Sen. Hillary Clinton (35 percent) and Sen. Barack Obama (23 percent).
Gore refused to endorse any candidate, saying that the election is 500 days away.
Gore has stopped short of closing the campaign door, but he has left little room to expect anything else.
"I've kind of fallen out of love with politics. ...Whatever experience and talents I've gained over the years -- I think it may well be that the highest and best use of that is to try to bring enough awareness of the solutions to the climate crisis and enough of a sense of urgency that we come together across party lines on behalf of our children," Gore said.

Gore's son in treatment
After 16 years in Congress, Gore was vice president under President Bill Clinton from 1993 to 2001.
He was the Democratic nominee for president in 2000, losing to President Bush after a lengthy legal fight over voting results in Florida. Gore toyed with the idea of a rematch against Bush in 2004, but decided against it.
Gore was making TV appearances to discuss Saturday's "Live Earth" concerts, which will be broadcast by NBC. Watch Gore discuss his campaign with Larry King »
The purpose of the event is to "trigger a global movement to solve the climate crisis," according to the Live Earth Web site. E-mail to a friend

There is no excuse
There is no excuse for Gore not to run for president. It's as if he's admitting that he doesn't believe in the American system anymore. What a cop out. Maybe we should all just resign ourselves to the fact that we live in a country of corporate fascism. Yes we want to fight global warming, but as president he can do that and so much more for the people that is needed. In an odd way, he will appear selfish to sit this out as if he's above this politics, democracy thing. Hell, we elected him, he was robbed, he owes the people to set this country back on the right track.
Out of Love with Politics?
I am a new member, who has been forced to join the Gore Camp after reading a Michael Moore book, "Dude, where's my country?"
Unfortunately, In the book, Moore doesn't tout Gore, on the contrary, Oprah Winfrey is his candidate of choice, (and I would vote for her for VICE President, can you imagine that ticket?)
However, Moore spells out the chicanery, and lies which have dominated American politics during the Oil Wars, and the tremendous peril that the country is in as a result, and it has literally made me fear for my life!
There are SO many institutions in our nation which began in a benign fashion, and have deteriorated into virtual snake-pits! And, most of them have acronyms that we are all familiar with.
So for Our Mr. Gore to poo poo the notion of getting his hands dirty in the political cess-pool again, is unworthy of him.
I would remind him that the great unwashed masses that he feels do not deserve or respect him and his message simply need a leader to give them the TRUTH. The current Administration (who, in my opinion), is in bed with the Big Oil companies, DENIES the truth about Global Warming, and nearly every other danger which we are facing at this point.
Mr. Gore, if you ever sneak a peek at this website, just to see how things are going, listen to ol' bluestocking53941, you don't have to LOVE politics to help! I'm certain that Lincoln wasn't particularly crazy about them, but he was the man for the job at that particular point in history, as are YOU!!!!!
The deadlines are bearing down on us, please just do this!
There's fashionably late, and there's just TOO LATE.
It may be smoke and mirrors
It may be smoke and mirrors. Just as John Kerry fizzled in 2004, I hate to think this, but could Al Gore be in on the smoke and mirrors that the Bush administration has been known for. My point, this may be another attempt from the Republicans at stealing the White House. Kerry did show us how it was done in 2004. Did you ever wonder why Kerry did not contest the Ohio ballots? There is more to that then meets the eye. It seems Kerry just walked away from 2004 and didn't show up until a few months later, just like nothing happened. Now this time around with Al Gore, pretty much everyone knows Al Gore more then likely would have been able to win the White House. Maybe there was a deal from the inner circle of Gore's to stay out of the Presidential race so that Hillary could lose the election for the Democrats. I am simply amazed at all of this. Even this AlGore.org took how long before they pulled the story on us that Al Gore didn't have any intentions of running for President. I am disappointed by all this, but after 2000, anything is possible.
