Petitioning for Gore
WOW!!! We had what I think was a great first day effort in gathering petition signatures to get Gore's name on the NY presidential primary ballot. There were 3 of us "working the crowds" at the Rochester Public Market and we got 150 signatures in about 3 hours. My original goal of being able to turn in 500 signatures from the Monroe County area for the overall state effort may be a bit modest if we can keep up this pace. I have also distributed petition forms to about 5 or 6 other people who I hope can gather signatures from family, friends, co-workers, etc. We will be at the Public Market again on Nov. 10. If you can help us, we'd love to see you. We gather near Java Joe's on the Pennsylvania Ave. (north) side of the Market. I have a little sandwich board set up with a Gore poster on it so you should be able to find us. We really could use more people in this effort. There were times when one of us had people standing in line to sign the petition. It would go quicker and better if we had more helpers so we don't hold up the shoppers.
A lot of comments were along the line that Gore would win easily over anyone else in the field if he would just declare. There were several people who had a favorite candidate already so didn't want to help get Gore on the ballot. And, a number of people asked, of course, if Gore was really running - to which I always replied that he hadn't declared absolutely that he wouldn't; only that he had not plans at present to run.
So, if you can, join us on the 10th and catch the Gore fever.

Update
Hi everybody,
I've been out petitioning again tonight, and I did pretty well. I’ve been able to fill a page of 15 in about an hour. Two pages tonight, two last Saturday. If I can keep that up every night now, and maybe more on the week ends, it’ll be a lot in 20 days...(gulp) I found some good techniques I thought I’d share:
Here in NYC there is plenty of foot traffic just about everywhere. I stood on the corner at a busy intersection, this was 34th and Park. Because it's busy, no one will cross against the light, and because they are both big streets, if one direction turns red, not that many people just choose to cross the other way... if they are heading south, for example, on Park, they are likely to be on the side they want to be, so if they hit the light at 34th, they have to wait. Ok, so that's when I approach them. I wait for the light to turn red, for people to stop at the corner, and I approach the ones who are away from the edge a bit. No point in haranguing the ones out on the edge or in the gutter, they’re in a hurry. So I approach someone, smile and say "Hi, are you a Democrat?" Here in NY the odds are pretty good they'll say "Yes." Some won't answer at all, some will say no, some will say they are not registered, some will shrug, some will say they are from another country (and they usually support Gore.) But, if they answer "Yes", that's great because they are already saying yes to something, and I know immediately they are Democrats. Then I say, "Would you like to see Al Gore's name on the NY Primary Ballot?" Almost everyone says "Yes" again to that! That’s to yeses in a row; I'm cruisin'. Then I say, "I'm collecting signatures to put him on the ballot, can you help?" People love to help, so that works really, really well. Now, some times they say "He doesn't want to run" or "He's not going to run" or "He's doing better things now, not running" etc., to which I say, "Yes, but even if he doesn't run, this kind of ground swell of support only strengthens his hand, what ever he does…", which clinches the deal almost every time. The hardest part is getting someone to say "Yes" to the first question. "Are you a Democrat?" is good because it does double duty, it gets them to say yes, if they are, and it selects out the people who are not Dems right away.
I also tried in the Village, but was surprised that mid town was better. A lot of down trodden cynics in the village. And I can’t believe how many people are on cell phones… seems like half! But the quiet part of Bleecker Street in front of my building was pretty good, too.
It looks like it’s going to be 50 to 60 degrees for the next week, maybe longer. Possible showers now and then, but mostly pretty nice and sunny. Let’s take advantage of the good weather!
We had a great day too...
Here in NYC, three of us met in Washington Square Park and got about 75 in two hours. We have more in our particular little group working on 86th street today, too....
Wow!
Excellent!
Keep up the good work...

We've only just begun!
Ok, so we need to get the numbers up! First thing is to get more petitioners.. Can any of you get others into the effort? Please consider hunting around the other Gore meet ups and blogs and encouraging people to down load the petitions and instructions..

8.5x14 Petition (15 signatures):

Spread this info around.. If we have 50 people going at it, and they get 100 signatures each in the next week... well, we need more than that because some may be challenged... but the point is we need lots of elves to pull this off. It's still very doable, but it will take effort. So, any one you can get, or anywhere you can post a plea for help, will be just great.
Good to hear you're back
From one of your earlier comments, I thought we had lost you for this campaign. Glad to see you're still on board. We have a "modest" little group here in Rochester, but I hope a few more of them will catch the fever. I am in contact with quite a few, although I must admit most are friends and not directly through the web site connection. However, I guess it really doesn't matter where the help comes from. Hopefully over the next week, with some petitions I have left with friends who thought they might get a few signatures, plus another run at the Public Market next Saturday, we can generate another 200 signatures over the next week. I'm really curious whether there are similar activities in places like Albany, Syracuse, Buffalo, etc. I can't seem to get a real sense of that from activity at either this web site or the draftgore.com web site. Do you have any sense?
Busy, but not too busy to pitch in!
I was afraid to bite off too much, and I'm glad Steve was able to get things going, but I'm definitely still in it. :-) Glad you are too.
