Don't piss off Republicans
In response to one of the other entries I wrote this reply, that I believe is very important for everyone to keep in mind: "I was totally shocked when I heard "someone" on the conference call say we can't alienate the Republicans by supporting Gays! WHAT? That is an ISSUE, and after I heard that today you can COUNT ON ME PERSONALLY YELLING AS LOUDLY AS I CAN THAT TWO PEOPLE THAT COMMIT TO ONE ANOTHER ARE COMMITTED TO ONE ANOTHER - California has nothing to do with it, contrary to his comment! I am not easily shocked, but today was . . . By all means let's not piss of the Republicans

I never though that I would hear any Democrat in this day in age, with the attention the subject has received, all over the world that I would hear such a prejudicial biased comment from a group of people committed to changing the world to a clean, healthy and hopefully Democratic world. My earlier e-mail to you was meant for everyone regarding this subject. I also didn't realize it was just group organizers involved in this subject. I agree with you and Dick...that we have to stay focused on our goals, and not get side-tracked with heated arguments. Perhaps something was taken out of context last night? I wasn't on the call. I do know that things can get blown out of proportion and unhealthy. Yes, we do want to attract the republican swing voters. We all know that Al Gore will support gay marriage when he's president. People start pointing fingers and generalizing. Let's all work on what's important. We are on the same page.
Fear
We can speak out against the fear which overwhelms this country and the politics of this country or we can speak and vote out those who have made and continue to make fear a daily emotion.
In 2004 John Kerry and John Edwards not only did not even bother to show up in the senate to vote for or against FMA (Federal Marriage Amendment), they visited my home state within days of discrimination being placed in our state constitution saying they would have voted for such discrimination. Many of us held our noses and voted for the ticket. What was our choice? We kept waiting for the courageous younger man who apparently was John Kerry to show up and never saw him.
For the past several months I've looked closely at all the candidates. I am not a Democrat nor a Republican but an independent and frankly, a member of the Communist Party and Socialist. This is America of the 2000's, not America of the 1950's folks and as an American I have the right to my beliefs. And while I may not agree with you, I will defend to the death your right to express those beliefs. What I saw within the current bunch of candidates was a basic lack of courage....the courage to speak out and lead rather than follow what the current polls are saying. Now more than ever in my time on this earth, we are in desperate need of such leadership. I saw such courage in Al Gore and wanted to be a part of the draft Gore campaign partly because of that courage. His stand on issues which affect me also made an impact on my decision.
There is little wonder that Americans are fed up with partisian politics. Promises made and not kept has become the norm from both sides of the aisle. What is best for my re-election and my party are more important than what is best for the people I represent. There was no doubt in my mind that Al Gore was the one who could change this trend and bring confidence back to OUR government and OUR country. That he has the courage and conviction as well as the experience to not only bring such confidence and trust back for Americans, but to bring confidence and trust back to America from the international community.
Last night I was the one who made the statement about June being Pride month and the invaluable resource that could mean for this campaign. In 2004 we in St. Louis registered 19k people at the local Pride celebration. And I was stunned to hear what I did about Karl Rove and the fear we should have for him........frankly BS!! But I was even more stunned to hear comments about closet doors closing.
I believe in Al Gore and will continue to believe in him and his ability to lead. I believe that he is the one who can bring us out of what at best will be called the Bush era of incompetence and deception. What I cannot do is continue my involvement in AlGore.org and it's partisian approach to what I sincerely believe to be the most important political move of our time. I will continue to work toward Al Gore becoming our next president, but not via this group. I will not live my life in fear. I will not live my life in the closet.

I am truly sorry to hear that you are choosing to let the comment of one person affect your opinions and actions in regard to the whole group. It appears to me that the majority of us based on our responses all morning (including my 3 blogs) support not living in fear, and support the freedom to love and marry whomever. While I agree with and support your feelings, I disagree with the wisdom and thought behind your decision making. Your voice is needed in this group. Hope you reconsider as one persons comment does not equal the sentiments of all of us at algore.org
Did I miss something or are you going to let one voice
that sees things differently than the many of us, force you away from this group and cause?
How does that one voice become the voice and opinion of the rest of us?

And while we talk of rights and speech, that person that expressed his fear of Rovian tactics, did not state those fears as being his values.

Hi,
Normally I do not respond to any subject matter brought to this forum that does not involve drafting Gore, and I continue to believe that this forum should be used for that sole purpose just so we stay focused, otherwise it turns into a venting house like so many other blogs. However, I do want to state I agree with you completely. Responding out of fear to what we believe the Republicans will say about us is misguided. One of the reasons I personally have grown to love Gore so much is that I see him not responding out of fear and saying what he believes, even if he is ridiculed by some. We need to aspire to the same as human beings. I was struck last night by how such a comment would never be tolerated if it was made in reference to blacks, or women or some other minority. We have a long way to go as a people still. It is understandable that some people have such fears about the republicans potential to distort and damage, but we should not respond by silence. Gore would not do so, Nelson Mandela would not do so, John Lennon would not do so. Such reactions are misguided and will ultimately set us back as a people as well as a country.

I strongly agree wiuth Kerry. We should cease being on the defensive and come out and state what we really believe in. That is the only way in which we shall have credability. If we are attacked for a statement that agrees with our beliefs and morality, we should maintain our position and respond by pointing out the weaknesses of the attacker. Hiding our beliefs will only lead to future problems. These beliefs will eventually emerge and trying to defend them later will be much more difficult than it would be to do so at the start. I believe the public is getting btired of being exposed to "manufactured beliefs" and wants to learn more about the real person.

I strongly agree wiuth Kerry. We should cease being on the defensive and come out and state what we really believe in. That is the only way in which we shall have credability. If we are attacked for a statement that agrees with our beliefs and morality, we should maintain our position and respond by pointing out the weaknesses of the attacker. Hiding our beliefs will only lead to future problems. These beliefs will eventually emerge and trying to defend them later will be much more difficult than it would be to do so at the start. I believe the public is getting btired of being exposed to "manufactured beliefs" and wants to learn more about the real person.
