Who Said Al Gore Invented the Internet?

Not Al Gore! The Swift Boat-type sound bite was created during the 2000 election. It’s biased and mean. According to Newt Gingrich (of all people), “Gore is the person who, in Congress, most systematically worked to make sure that we got to an Internet.” (Gerstenzang, Sept. 22, 2000). Gore never claimed to have “invented” the Internet. What Gore said was that he “took the initiative in creating the Internet,” which lines up with Gingrich’s comments. It was the political initiative that he referred to. It was political hatchet-men who twisted the quote to successfully make a negative political issue (albeit an inaccurate one) in 2000. I hope we see the end to Rove-style politics in this next election. It needs to go the way that McCarthyism went in the '50's.

This issue has been discussed lot of time and Al Gore stated in an interview that he has not invented the internet and at a one of the meeting of democratic leader he explained with a very good sense of humor " I was pretty tired when I made that comment because I had been up very late the night before inventing the camcorder." I guess it is enough to conclude that Al Gore is not the inventor of the internet.

Who Said Al Gore Invented the Internet?

Who said Mr. Gore invented the Internet? Al Gore did. He said on national television that he initiated its creation. I have no quarrel at all with anyone's summarizing that quite preposterous statement as a claim of invention. I don't consider myself particularly biased, and were I conscious of being so, I'd explain my relevant biases, as I am trained to do as a social scientist. And certainly I do not wish to be mean to Mr. Gore, whose record of service I admire, not least because I was a beneficiary of his HPCC when I really needed the boost. But the fact remains that the conceptual planning of the Internet (ARPANET) was initiated 15 years before Mr. Gore entered congressional service, and the technology's development began in earnest 12 years before his first swearing-in. It is a fig leaf more embarrassing than the subject it covers, to claim that the "Swift Boat-type sound bite" was created by McCarthyesque Republicans, when in fact it was Mr. Gore himself who spun the tale. His contribution was made at the back end of the Internet's development, and came at a time and in a manner crucial to its opening for non-classified use. There was no need for him to exaggerate his important contribution, much less to confabulate with a tall tale about initiating its creation. Good Lord. Get real.

Gore's Full Quote During an Interview with Wolf Blitzer

Al Gore, so often misquoted by those trying to distort the record, never claimed to have “invented” the Internet. What he actually said, during an interview with Wolf Blitzer on March 9, 1999, was: “During my service in the United States Congress I took the initiative in creating the Internet.” The full transcript of the interview, may be found at the following link:

Jake Tapper puts it all in perspective in a Salon.com article about Al Gore on August 4, 1999:

“Take his most infamous utterance to date: ‘During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet,’ from an interview he gave to CNN a few months back.

“While this was obviously an overstatement, Gore actually does deserve a substantial amount of credit for the technology through which you're reading this story. ‘Gore took a critical part [in launching the Internet],’ says Dave Farber, a professor of telecommunication systems at the University of Pennsylvania. ‘He did misspeak, and everybody jumped on him, but he made a very significant contribution.’

“Vinton Cerf, the Stanford researcher who sketched out a design for the Internet in 1973, seconds that emotion: ‘It is entirely fitting that the vice president take some credit for helping to create an environment in which Internet could thrive.’
