WHY WE SHOULD ELECT AL GORE 2008!

In November 2000, I watched the Election Coverage well into the night. I was amazed to hear the Election called for Gore and then later for Bush. It was then that I realized that our votes are not what actually elect a President. While I did know about the Electoral College system, I did not realize how it would actually fail us as a Nation. My naiveté about the political process had actually made me believe that each of our votes counts.
I watched in horror as Al Gore asked for a recount of some counties. "Butterfly Ballots" that weren't clear! Votes going to Republicans that belonged to Democrats! Surely as in other races that were close we would have a new election!
The Supreme Court ruled. I respect Al Gore for accepting their ruling. However, this too points out the problem with political appointees – Judges, the Head of F.E.M.A.
Since September 2001, our Nation has moved backwards in every manner. We went from a Nation with a strong budget surplus to a Nation of debt that will burden our children and grand children .
We were a Nation who had been attacked by a foreign group. I remember the coverage given to the search for Bin Laden before 9/11. I supported going into Afghanistan in search of him and the other organizers of these attacks. We went to Afghanistan in what was a justified response to the World trade Center attacks. But instead of focusing on the capture of Bin Laden and the destruction of the Al Qaeda network, this Administration pulled our troops from that mission to invade Iraq.
It is true that we did not know what kinds of weapons Iraq had. But Al Gore, someone who had knowledge from his previous briefs as Vice President, warned us about what would happen if we invaded Iraq. Colin Powell had told us the truth too – it was known as the "Pottery Barn" rule – "if you break it, you own it". The Bush Administration did not listen to Al Gore, Secretary of State Powell, or the other military advisors who spoke against invading Iraq.
Since the time we have invaded Iraq, there has been tremendous casualties. Casualties of American soldiers who believed we were fighting a just war. Casualties of Iraqi citizens who did not ask us to come there, and who have a quality of life today worse than under Saddam Hussein's rule. Just this week, even with the troop surge, Baghdad is only one third controlled by U.S. troops or Iraqi forces.
We have squandered all of the good will from other nations that we had after 9/11.
Russia is now posturing for another Cold War because we are planning to put missile shields in the Czech Republic and Poland. All of the good will gained by previous Presidents after the fall of the Berlin Wall is being lost by the aggression of this Administration.
We need Al Gore because he has experience in foreign policy.
We need Al Gore because he understands that the political process in the United States is broken and there needs to be many changes made to fix it.
We need Al Gore because we need someone of high moral standards that will not lie to the American people.
We need Al Gore because he is capable of comprehending Global Warming and other environmental issues. He knows what needs to be done to stop global warming, and to address issues such as our dependence on foreign oil, solar energy, wind power, geothermal energy, recycling, and to make our manufacturers realize the need for Hybrid cars and other vehicles that require less oil or can run on biofuels.
We need Al Gore for President 2008!
