Win the Debate or Lose

I believe the three debates will determine who will be the next President. If Barack Obama can't get his #$%@ together he will lose.

Barack Obama. Click image to expand.Barack Obama

Foreign policy didn't come up much in tonight's presidential debate; but when it did, Sen. John McCain—whose strengths lie in this realm—seemed surprisingly unsteady while Sen. Barack Obama came off as more sure-footed than he did in the first contest.

Several times, McCain opened himself up to easy counterpunches. At least once, he was vague to a baffling degree. And he contradicted himself on a key issue (though Obama didn't say so).

McCain left the biggest opening when he touted his judgment and experience in answer to a question about when to use military force, capping his response by noting, as he did several times two weeks ago, that Obama doesn't understand these issues.

This allowed Obama to reply that, yes, he didn't understand a lot of things—for instance, he didn't understand why George W. Bush invaded Iraq, which had nothing to do with Sept. 11, yet let Osama Bin Laden thrive in the mountains of Pakistan. McCain, he noted, said that the invasion would be swift and we'd be welcome as liberators—judgments that were wrong and fatal.

The other opening for Obama came when McCain chided the Democrat for saying that he'd "attack Pakistan." McCain quoted Teddy Roosevelt's chestnut "Talk softly, carry a big stick," yet here was Obama, doing the exact opposite.

Obama had two replies. First, he wasn't calling for an invasion of Pakistan—just for "taking out" Osama Bin Laden if we had him in our sights and the Pakistanis couldn't or wouldn't do it. Then he won the round decisively by remarking, "This is the guy who said 'Bomb, bomb Iran,' " who called for "the annihilation of North Korea," and who, after we ousted the Taliban from Kabul, said, "Next up, Baghdad." That's not talking softly. (McCain's response, that he was just joking with an old veteran friend, was, first, not true—he said it in a public forum—and, second, quite lame.)

McCain's contradiction came early in the debate, when he said that he knew how to cut defense spending, citing his savings of $6.8 billion in an aircraft contract—but then, not one minute later, he advocated a freeze in all federal spending except for defense and veterans. If he knows how to squeeze defense contracts, it's unclear why he would exempt the Defense Department, which spends more than $500 billion a year on items that, by the Pentagon's own accounting, have nothing to do with the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan or the wider war on terror.

Finally, McCain's baffling statement: "I'll get Osama Bin Laden, my friends. I know how to get him. I know how to do it." This is reminiscent of Richard Nixon's secret plan to win the war in Vietnam—except that McCain belongs to the same party as the current president. If McCain knows how to do this, shouldn't he have told George W. Bush?

Otherwise, the foreign-policy segment of the debate was a rehash of the previous debate. There were the same disagreements over the merits of talking with Iran "without precondition" and the wisdom of a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq. There were the same agreements, more or less, over wagging a finger at the Russians over their aggression against Georgia.

The one new question—under what criteria each of them would go to war for strictly humanitarian reasons—went unanswered by both. (Obama said allies were important in such circumstances—true but an evasion. McCain said, "I know these situations. I've been in there all my life"—his customary mantra when he doesn't have an answer to a question about national-security matters.)

Overall: not a deeply inspiring debate, but a clear victory for Obama.

Rigid

I am not a body language expert but it was impossible not to notice how stiff and rigid McCain was during the debate. He made no eye contact and was almost in a dissociative state during Obama's retorts. It took every muscle McCain had to contain himself so as not to explode. This maybe due to the PTSD he no doubt has. I can imagine that during brutal interrogations he would dissociate, stare away, and contain himself physically.

No wonder McCain does not want to meet with adversaries. His physical posture would be a turn off in any meeting and if it is indeed due to PTSD, it is not something he can alter.

Oh, the Drama! McCain in the Theater of the Absurd

This is Priceless!

By Michael Grunwald Saturday, Sep. 27, 2008

If you missed the news this week, you didn't miss all that much. The stock market threatened to crash, but didn't. John McCain threatened to skip the presidential debate unless members of Congress approved a huge financial bailout, but they didn't, so he didn't. The debate went on; the candidates stayed on message; the pundits all agreed that it wasn't a "game-changer." You did miss the largest bank failure in American history, not to mention a $25 billion bailout of the auto industry, but that's chump change these days, right? You might not have heard that investment banks are now officially extinct, but basically the economy is on the same precipice it was on last week.

What you did miss was an amazing week of political theater, starring the frenetic, operatic, borderline erratic McCain, the former fighter pilot who seems to have found his calling as a kamikaze politician. He might not win the election — another thing you missed this week was Barack Obama pulling ahead in the polls — but when it's over he's a shoo-in for a show on TNT. RuPaul doesn't know drama like McCain knows drama.

After spending most of last week walking back his observation that the fundamentals of the economy were sound, McCain suddenly cut short his debate prep on Wednesday to announce he was "suspending" his campaign to fly back to Washington to rescue the Wall Street bailout negotiations, although he didn't seem to suspend much except for an interview with an irate David Letterman, and he didn't fly back to Washington until he had finished a political meeting with the bepearled former Hillary Clinton supporter Lynn Forester de Rothschild and a bunch of network interviews and a speech to the Clinton Global Initiative in New York City on Thursday, which, as astute political observers noted, was the day after Wednesday. What's more, the Wall Street bailout negotiations seemed to be progressing pretty well without him; Democratic leaders who had trashed the Bush administration's initial $700 billion proposal had won concessions on transparency and taxpayer protections, and key senators from both parties were saying a deal was close. McCain and Obama had outlined similar goals for the package, and Obama had called McCain to discuss a joint statement Wednesday morning. Also, President Bush had made a prime-time speech calling for consensus, but we missed it, and we were here this week. Well, you probably would have missed it, too.

But then McCain made his surprise announcement that the financial crisis was more important than politics, which was why he had to drag the entire circus of presidential politics into the middle of the delicate negotiations. Which seemed to blow up the moment he arrived in town. Conservative Republicans in the House had their own ideas for a bailout, including a suspension of capital-gains taxes, which made no sense as a response to a Wall Street free-fall — a capital-gains tax holiday would only encourage a bigger sell-off — but hey, conservative Republicans in the House really hate capital-gains taxes. In any case, at the White House meeting McCain had ginned up, he mostly kept quiet, but apparently left the impression he agreed with the recalcitraint Republicans. Sarah Palin had told Katie Couric that failing to take action could create another Great Depression — alas, you missed a great interview, which you can catch up on here — but McCain had never committed to support the Administration's plan. When asked, he had claimed he hadn't read it, even though it was only a few pages long.

And so: no deal.

On Friday, though, McCain realized it probably wasn't in his interest to let Obama have the stage to himself, so he announced that he was going to debate after all, since the stalled negotiations were now on track, although in fact the on-track negotiations were now stalled, but whatever. By the time he left Washington — some Democrats suggested this was no coincidence — the negotiations seemed to un-stall. The bailout now appears to be back on track for next week, and at the debate, McCain suggested that he supports it. The wacky events of the week went unmentioned, and McCain made a strong case for himself as the candidate of adult leadership. Which, if you've been paying attention to his campaign, is probably true if your idea of an adult is Terrell Owens, although Terrell Owens is at least capable of running in a straight line.

There is, of course, a serious point to all this mishigas. The last eight years may have been a geopolitical and economic disaster, but one thing they have not lacked is drama. They've been eight exhausting years, and when Obama talks about change, he's implicitly talking about giving Americans a break, a timeout from grand history. It's like those T-shirts during the primary: End the Drama — Vote Obama. McCain has tried to make a similar case in a different way, arguing that he's steady and experienced while Obama is risky and dangerous. That case can get lost in his roller-coaster campaign.

So now you're up to speed. Oh, one more thing: North Korea is restarting its nuclear program. These days, history doesn't seem to take many breaks.

Theater of the Absurd

The Repubs media will act like McCain was a genus despite his Absurd behavior.

Obama did exactly what was required

I thought Obama won, hands down.
I would've liked to see him be more aggressive, and I thought he let a great deal of openings go by without a jab. I would have liked to hear how bomb, bomb, bombing Iran was going to help ol' Captain Ahab get Moby Bin Laden, or help our economy... But I think it was clear that he wasn't out there trying to win over the "angry liberals." He wants to please the "can't we all just get along" moderates, who believe that the only reason to be "angry" about anything over the last eight years is "partisanship."
For them, he did exactly the right thing. There is no right and wrong, "facts" are relative to "belief," and everything can be expressed in a "six on one hand, half-a-dozen on the other" storyline. In their eyes, both sides are wrong, and anyone who wants to fight over politics is a "radical." "It's time for healing America."
Obama has registered tons of new voters, and many of them don't like the pugnacious or combative resentments that can come with politics. They don't want to fight with the preacher or be identified with people who have been judged to be "anti-American,' "Godless," "tax-and-spend" or any of the other labels that have been sewn to the lapel of the left of center. They are called "post-partisan," and for what they want in a candidate, Obama did it just perfect. He didn't have to fight at all... Just dance around the ring looking unchallenged and not get hit.
The "win" or "lose" of a debate is now utterly subjective and is mostly determined in the spin-rooms afterward.

What's up M.D.

I am not going to say what I thought he should have done, I am just going to send the info to the DNC & Barack Obama & hope that he use them; you never know who (The enemy) is ease dropping on our conversations.

One thing I did get from the debates was Obama gave his supporters, who aren't up to date with the issues, the talking points they need to win the debates with their friends. But, for political junkies like us IT WAS NOTHING NEW. We really wanted to see McCain's blood & guts verbally beat out of him.

I am hoping Obama is a record breaker

Hey B.C.
(folksie metaphore warning)
Once upon a time, when "fish-locators" were new, people started to see giant blips way down deep, where they weren't "supposed" to be. People thought that you caught big Muskie in the warm shallows, with big, noisy surface lures. But people had also been aware of the story of the world's record Muskie (along with quite a few other giants) coming out of the St . Lawrence River, caught by a couple who, it was said, had found a way to, both, reach and "activate" deep, cold water Muskie. Apparently, they never told their secret.

I think that Obama is like that couple.
The base of both parties are always gonna' vote, and catching us may be fun and fast(watching us break from the shallows and jump at noisy surface lures), and losing us may really hurt (the ones that got away). But, if Obama can "activate" the people who don't vote, and get them into the booths... That may be the real prize.
What's important at this point in the game is winning the election. He may not have all the fish landed, but he's got a lot of them hooked, and none of the experts seem to know how he does it. Lots of theories, but no replications. The enemy may be watching, but I don't think the monkey's can do, just because the monkeys can see, in this case.

I hope that Obama is doing things different 'cause he knows better than the armchair quarterbacks. We can't afford another "almost."

PaleHawkWoman -> Sarah Palin's Record On Native Alaskan Issues (9/11/2008 10:00:45 PM)

This has been posted on several Native American sites concerning ongoing court cases and other issues involving Gov. Palin and Native Alaskans. I realize that what happens to Indians and Inuit means little if anything to most Americans, but it is important to us Native Americans. These are justice issues, and the Lord has always had quite a bit to say about how "the least of these" are treated. If one disregards the Lord's commandments, how can one call oneself christian? Gov. Palin has not shown any obedience to Christ nor love of her fellow man in her attitudes or actions towards Native Alaskans.

Elected officials take an oath to uphold the law of the land, both the US Constitution as well as the constitution of their state. In her actions Gov. Palin has apparently decided that neither she nor the state of Alaska is obliged to abide by the US Constitution.

Sarah Palin’s Record on Alaska Native and Tribal Issues

1. Palin has attacked Alaska Native Subsistence Fishing

Perhaps no issue is of greater importance to Alaska Native peoples as the right to hunt and fish according to ancient customary and traditional practices, and to carry on the subsistence way of life for future generations.
Governor Sarah Palin has consistently opposed those rights.
Once in office, Governor Palin decided to continue litigation that seeks to overturn every subsistence fishing determination the federal government has ever made in Alaska. (State of Alaska v. Norton, 3:05-cv-0158-HRH (D. Ak).) In pressing this case, Palin decided against using the Attorney General (which usually handles State litigation) and instead continued contracting with Senator Ted Stevens’ brother-in-law’s law firm (Birch, Horton, Bittner & Cherot).

The goal of Palin’s law suit is to invalidate all the subsistence fishing regulations the federal government has issued to date to protect Native fishing, and to force the courts instead to take over the roll of setting subsistence regulations. Palin’s law suit seeks to diminish subsistence fishing rights in order to expand sport and commercial fishing.
In May 2007, the federal court rejected the State’s main challenge, holding that Congress in 1980 had expressly granted the U.S. Interior and Agriculture Departments the authority to regulate and protect Native and rural subsistence fishing activities in Alaska. (Decision entered May 15, 2007 (Dkt. No. 110).)

Notwithstanding this ruling, Palin continues to argue in the litigation that the federal subsistence protections are too broad, and should be narrowed to exclude vast areas from subsistence fishing, in favor of sport and commercial fishing. Palin opposes subsistence protections in marine waters, on many of the lands that Natives selected under their 1971 land claims settlement with the state and federal governments, and in many of the rivers where Alaska Natives customarily fish. (Alaska Complaint at 15-18.) Palin also opposes subsistence fishing protections on Alaska Native federal allotments that were deeded to individuals purposely to foster Native subsistence activities. All these issues are now pending before the federal district court.

2. Palin has attacked Alaska Native Subsistence Hunting

Palin has also sought to invalidate critical determinations the Federal Subsistence Board has made regarding customary and traditional uses of game, specifically to take hunting opportunities away from Native subsistence villagers and thereby enhance sport hunting. Palin’s attack here on subsistence has focused on the Ahtna Indian people in Chistochina. Although the federal district court has rejected Palin’s challenge, she has carried on an appeal that was argued in August 2008. (State of Alaska v. Fleagle, No. 07-35723 (9th Cir.).)

In both hunting and fishing matters, Palin has continued uninterrupted the policies initiated by the former Governor Frank Murkowski Administration, challenging hunting and fishing protections that Native people depend upon for their subsistence way of life in order to enhance sport fishing and hunting opportunities. Palin’s lawsuits are a direct attack on the core way of life of Native Tribes in rural Alaska.

3. Palin has attacked Alaska Tribal Sovereignty

Governor Palin opposes Alaska tribal sovereignty.
Given past court rulings affirming the federally recognized tribal status of Alaska Native villages, Palin does not technically challenge that status. But Palin argues that Alaska Tribes have no authority to act as sovereigns, despite their recognition.
So extreme is Palin on tribal sovereignty issues that she has sought to block tribes from exercising any authority whatsoever even over the welfare of Native children, adhering to a 2004 legal opinion issued by the former Murkowski Administration that no such jurisdiction exists (except when a state court transfers a matter to a tribal court).
Both the state courts and the federal courts have struck down Palin’s policy of refusing to recognize the sovereign authority of Alaska Tribes to address issues involving Alaska Native children. Native Village of Tanana v. State of Alaska, 3AN-04-12194 CI (judgment entered Aug. 26, 2008) (Ak. Super. Ct.); Native Kaltag Tribal Council v. DHHS, No. 3:06-cv-00211-TMB (D. Ak.), pending on appeal No 08-35343 (9th Cir.)). Nonetheless, Palin’s policy of refusing to recognize Alaska tribal sovereignty remains unchanged.

*note- Palin's administration has sought to remove Native children from their communities and terminate tribal/family rights so as to place these children with non-Native families through adoption, thereby cutting off all ties between the Native community/family and the child. This is a violation of federal law intended to protect Native children and families, and ultimately Native cultures as well. *

4. Palin has attacked Alaska Native Languages

Palin has refused to accord proper respect to Alaska Native languages and voters by refusing to provide language assistance to Yup'ik speaking Alaska Native voters. As a result, Palin was just ordered by a special three-judge panel of federal judges to provide various forms of voter assistance to Yup'ik voters residing in southwest Alaska. Nick v. Bethel, No. 3:07-cv-0098-TMB (D. Ak.) (Order entered July 30, 2008). Citing years of State neglect, Palin was ordered to provide trained poll workers who are bilingual in English and Yup'ik; sample ballots in written Yup'ik; a written Yup'ik glossary of election terms; consultation with local Tribes to ensure the accuracy of Yup'ik translations; a Yup'ik language coordinator; and pre-election and post-election reports to the court to track the State's efforts.

In sum, measured against some the rights that are most fundamental to Alaska Native Tribes – the subsistence way of life, tribal sovereignty and voting rights – Palin’s record is a failure.

Do the right thing

Wayne in WA State's picture

Barack Obama did not win the toughest nomination fight ever by losing heart when the polls don't look good one week. He's one tough hombre. I just finished watching Barack on David Letterman tonight. He's a winner. Considering the attention span of the American people the general election has barely started.

The Hillary Clinton campaign thought the primary race was a sprint that was gonna be over after Super Tuesday. The McCain campaign may think the general election is over after the Convention and VP selection.

Everyone gets down, but Champions don't stay down. I'm putting my money on Senator Obama and the American people.

When can we see a debate?

Time's moving quickly, it's time for a debate to take the focus off the new celebrity in town. I cannot believe the American people are so forgetful, so easily fooled, to not see thru this BS.

Great Morning Gailwind

Most conservatives understand that the average American will forget a lot of things; we are too busy living our lives.

It is our job to make sure they don't forget the lies McCain & Palin "The queen of pork!" spoke about in their acceptance speeches that had 32 million viewers.

We should also use our knowledge of the facts & call the conservative talk radio, debate them & stick to one point; they are using less informed callers to make the Democratic Party look like uninformed idiots.

You may have to play dumb to get past the call screener, because their call screeners are screening out intelligent Dems.

The Rethugs can’t win the debate, so they will continue to indulge in a misinformation campaign.

We are in a battle with self-serving schemers, so we have to look at this war of words as a battle over the real American values. If an 18 year old teen is willing to join the military & die for our country we should be willing to stand up to repugnant conservatives.

I loved the lipstick on the pig comment

Proverbs: 14:25 A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful [witness] speaketh lies.

Verbally fighting repubs is like fighting bullies. If person starts winning against a bully he or she will either start squealing like a pig, or they will bow down. The key to defeating the repub bullies is not let up on them. If you let on them they will go back to being bullies.

"A Lie Can Get Half Way Around The World, While The Truth Is Putting On Its Shoes" Mark Twain

The McCain / Palin team will continue to use lies to try to trick voters into believing their propaganda; then move to the next set of lies when they are caught in them. Don’t let them move on because all the voters don’t pay attention at one time. We have to vigilantly expose the Faux news types for what they are for their schemes to fall apart.

My Battle Cry

I believe Barack Obama can force the evangelicals to face the truth by consistantly forcing them to defend the lies John McCain & Sarah Palin "The Queen of Pork!" used to manipulate them in their convention speeches.

We sshould market their lies as a microcosm of what a McCain Palan "The Queen of Pork!" administration represents; it is also another example of how they are no different than President Bu$h.

All we have to do is use the two speeches like a new campaign slogan like Sean Hannity uses his show talking about bill Arers everyday.

We should be defining a future McCain / Palin "The Queen of Pork!" administration in the same light as we defined the Bu$h administration when we found out there were no WMD’s in Iraq.

Yes, they will try to counter by pointing out the few lies Obama has told but Obama did not tell them on the mountain top while over 30 million Americans were watching the two mislead them.

Critiquing Obama's political ad

http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid1185304443/bctid1782584531

This political ad drops the ball because it main point attacks McCain’s maverick credentials not his integrity. Nor does it define a future McCain administration as one that will not be honest to the American people when it counts.

McCain not being a real maverick is not as big of an issue as McCain & Palin "The Queen of Pork!" lying to the American people during a time when they were being introduced to Millions of Americans.

It is legal for an employer to fire employee because that person lies on their application. People who purposely lie in job interviews have a slim to no chance of being hired; why are evangelicals marketing Palin "The Queen of Pork!" as if she has their values?

For the past two weeks, I have not had much access to the internet. I have also watched virtually no news on cable television. For the most part, I have been getting my news from talk radio, the national news (CBS, ABC, & NBC) & my local news paper. Those are the places were Barack Obama seems to be losing the debate.

When I do get internet access, I start feeling confident Obama is going to win. But, when I am not on my college’s computer, I feel hopelessness.

Even if Obama responds to the smears, quickly and forcefully, they are still out there and the rapid response is just a response. Fox will cover the smear as news. Will anyone cover the response? Check out Media Matters and see how much bias there is in the media and whether it is the fabled liberal bias.

Can't win by playing defense. Obama and Biden need to mount some serious attacks. Ignore the screeching, whiny Palin. Attack McCain -- get the white whale back into the headlines -- rise above the distraction. Palin is just a noise machine and smoke screen.
